Eco-Friendly Home Décor Ideas

Home Décor Ideas

If you are environmentally-conscious, you are probably aware that many of the things around your house are not exactly the eco-friendly type. All that plastic is everywhere and you know that it will eventually add to the pollution. Maybe you just want to add some decorations, but want to be sure that none of them will contribute to any nature-harming processes. Or maybe you just prefer long-lasting ornaments that will enrich your home’s scenery for longer periods without the need to constantly change them.

Either way, despite what you may think, making your options green does not mean you are limiting yourself. On the contrary, you have so many choices for eco-friendly home décor, and if you are creative enough, only your imagination may limit the number of possibilities.

If you have furniture or building materials which you want to exchange for a greener décor, look around your town. Surely there are some markets that accept furniture in good condition. Find one that offers you a reasonable price and sell, sell, sell. After that, you can browse the same store for things that actually fit your needs.

If you cannot find what you need in your town – or at least not in the open markets, – browse the web. Search in eBay or Craigslist, or other local or foreign sites. There are many eco-friendly sellers who are selling furniture or decorations in good condition, so look for something you might like.

Check your old furniture

You do not have to necessarily throw it away. Just look for a way to freshen it up. Most furniture is already good enough, but needs some proper cleaning as nobody has put the cloth to it for years.

Yes, this could lead to some stubborn stains which you may find hard to remove, but you can always hire a professional cleaner to do this job for you.

There are plenty of green cleaning services nowadays, so you will not have a lack of options.

When you acquire all you need

Start organizing it around the house. You might want to clean up a bit before you start. House cleaning is just as important, you know. Also, spring cleaning is the best time to freshen up your home with new décor. You can wait for the cleaning to start even when the new décor arrives – not all sellers will send over clean furniture.

Carpet cleaning is tedious enough to be done twice just because you overlooked the small detail of placing a dirty armchair over the newly cleaned carpet.

You can always opt for long

Lasting decorations which you don’t have to change once it gets discolored by dust or frequent cleaning. Again, plastic decorations are your enemy – they break down often and you contribute to pollution by throwing them away. There are plenty of timeless decorations you may use instead – colorful stones, seashells, coral, etc.

Nature can supply you with its own decorations in your very own backyard, you do not have to go look for chemical-filled ornaments. Or, if you like changing things up every now and then, look for recyclable accessories that will not do any harm once you have no need of them.

Save glass items like jars and bottles

You can reuse them as many times you like, and you can replace other things in your house with them. That plastic vase, for instance, can be exchanged for a bottle with a wider throat.

Use your creativity

Instead of going around and buying more paper pictures for your walls, look around for used paper. Check the backside. If it is still white, start drawing and make your own decorations! If you have kids, this is a great way to inspire creativity and develop their imagination.

Look around your home for white sheets which you do not use. Find them a purpose. Again, if you are artsy and handy enough, a huge white sheet and a pair of scissors can do wonders for the home décor. Make your own curtains or lamp-hanging ornaments, or even chair and sofa upholstery.

It is easy to go green when decorating your home. You probably already have plenty of options somewhere in your cupboard, closet or cellar. Search around when doing home cleaning and find something that you like, and then use it for a fresher look in your living room.
